ATR joins forces with ATA

The world's first International Tinnitus Awareness Week is this week: 21-27 May. ATR has joined forces with the American Tinnitus Association (ATA) to promote this very first global event, and to campaign for increased funding for research.

Our goal is to increase the number of people who:

  • know what tinnitus is
  • care about others who have tinnitus
  • will push for increased funding and more research on tinnitus

About Tinnitus Awareness Week

We need your help to spread the word about Tinnitus Awareness Week. We are promoting a number of strong messages to help establish that tinnitus is a noise that many people hear and that research is underway for cures for tinnitus.

We want to remind people that they can take easy steps to reduce the risk of developing tinnitus when they are around loud noises. These messages help convey basic information and give people hope that their tinnitus can be improved.

Tinnitus Awareness Week Messages

  • Tinnitus and ringing in the ears is the same thing.
  • Research is underway to find cures for tinnitus.
  • Tinnitus is often preventable with a little common sense and awareness:
    • Turn down the volume
    • Walk away from loud noise
    • Use earplugs

Spread the message...

Tinnitus that results from exposure to loud noise is preventable...

TAW: Is tinnitus on the increase>>
Is there a demographic shift?

Tinnitus is often associated with older people. However, we now know it affects people of every age and background. Teenagers, those in mid-life, and the older generation have all reported tinnitus.

The ICM survey we undertook last year smashed the myth that tinnitus is a symptom of old age. Ten percent of adults in the UK - including 9% in the 18-24 year old age range - have experienced tinnitus.

TAW: How you can help>>
Talk about what you know

Talk about your own experience with tinnitus. Think back to the time before you had tinnitus. Maybe you remember the day and activity you were doing when your tinnitus started. And, of course, you are very familiar with what life is like now. What about the time during which you learned to adjust? Many listeners will think that time in your life is the most interesting of all.

The UK's noisiest cities

The BBC recently reported that tests by the Hearing Company found sound levels in a number of UK cities were "worrying high" and were putting people's hearing at risk. The company recorded rush hour noise in 10 major cities to highlight daily levels.
