Action For Tinnitus Research Online Survey Results

Thank you for your recent participation in our online survey. We write as promised to provide you with the top line results, released to coincide with National Tinnitus Awareness Day on the 22nd of March 2005.

Survey Results
We had a phenomenal response to our Internet survey. Over 2250 questionnaires were completed providing a wealth of information. We did two surveys - an online survey on our website and a national ICM poll.

The results of both the survey and the ICM poll were even more shocking than we expected and have inspired a wealth of media coverage on the likes of BBC Breakfast News, ITV News, Channel Four News, BBC Radio 1, BBC 5 Live, Classic FM, 282 Independent Radio Stations, a host of BBC Radio stations and a number of regional newspapers. The results of these two studies have inspired us to double our resolve to find a cure for this condition that blights so many lives.

You can read all about Tinnitus Awareness Day, the press coverage - including and the results of the survey on our website: www.tinnitus-research.org

The topline results are:
  • 4.7 million adults have been affected by tinnitus. 12% of men and 8% of women (aged 16+) currently suffer or have suffered from tinnitus.
  • Tinnitus does not discriminate by age: The ATR study has finally smashed the myth that tinnitus is just a symptom of old age. Just under one in ten (9%) of adults in each of the 18-24, 25-34 & 35-44 year age groups have been affected by tinnitus.
  • Nations divided by suffering. The highest incidence of tinnitus is in Wales (17%) and the North East (15%). While the South East, North West, and Scotland have the lowest incidence – still a high 9%.
  • Long-term misery: 54% of current male sufferers and 35% of current female sufferers questioned have had tinnitus for over 7 years.
  • Tinnitus Torment: For 10% of male and 7% of female sufferers, tinnitus has a severe/devastating impact on their lives.
  • A Right To Silence: 86% of those questioned via the ATR online survey think that tinnitus isn't something that you should be expected to 'just put up with'. 95% feel that the NHS should spend more to boost
GP knowledge and understanding of the head noise complaint, 94% believe that tinnitus should be regarded as a condition in its own right.

The findings of the online survey relating to the various coping strategies and treatment options were most interesting but in order for the both the scientific and medical communities to take the results seriously, we need to ask some further questions. To this end, we would like to send you a further questionnaire in the coming weeks, which we'd be grateful if you would complete and return to us.

Action For Tinnitus Research is dedicated to continuing the search for a cure for tinnitus and to carry on battling to keep the 'condition' on the agenda. We want to increase our research effort and continue to fight for greater recognition of tinnitus and better support services for sufferers. But of course this all costs money!
