Action For Tinnitus Research Surveys

We had a phenomenal response to our Internet survey. Over 2250 questionnaires were completed providing a wealth of information. We did two surveys - an online survey on our website and a national ICM poll.

The results of both the survey and the ICM poll were even more shocking than we expected and have inspired a wealth of media coverage on the likes of BBC Breakfast News, ITV News, Channel Four News, BBC Radio 1, BBC 5 Live, Classic FM, 282 Independent Radio Stations, a host of BBC Radio stations and a number of regional newspapers. The results of these two studies have inspired us to double our resolve to find a cure for this condition that blights so many lives.

You can read all about Tinnitus Awareness Day, the press coverage - including and the results of the survey on our website: www.tinnitus-research.org

The topline results are:
  • 12% of men and 8% of women (aged 16+) currently suffer or have suffered from tinnitus.
  • Tinnitus does not discriminate by age: 9% of 18 to 24 year olds, and 14% of those aged 65+ currently suffer or have suffered.
  • Nations divided by suffering. The highest incidence of tinnitus is in Wales (17%) and the North East (15%). While the South East, North West, and Scotland have the lowest incidence – still a high 9%.
  • Long-term misery: 54% of current male sufferers and 35% of current female sufferers questioned have had tinnitus for over 7 years.
  • Tinnitus Torment: For 10% of male and 7% of female sufferers, tinnitus has a severe/devastating impact on their lives.
We cannot let these people continue to suffer - unheard

We need to continue the fight and keep tinnitus on the agenda. And, we need to increase our research effort. With your help we can.

Please help us to continue the fight to find a cure for tinnitus
