Belgian scientists have made a breakthrough discovery about a gene - known as 'TGBF1' that appears to contribute
to the development of otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is known to be one of the commonest causes of moderate
deafness in adults, but is also associated with tinnitus in many people who suffer form otosclerosis.

In the light of the tinnitus research trials taking place this year, ATR researchers are very interested in the
recent study undertaken at the University of Hamburg by Professor Christian Büchel into the beneficial effects
of placebo in patients not actually receiving active treatment. This study reinforces the view that is is
vitally important to include a 'control' group in all clinical trials.

Colorado resident and longstanding ATA member, Donna Brown is not sitting back idly and letting tinnitus beat her.
When doctors told her that there is nothing that can be done, her reply was, "I Don't Think So". So she strapped
on her boots and crampons, grabbed her ice axe, threw on her back pack and did what she could to prove them
wrong. Well she is at it again this year with higher goals for fund raising.
